Supporting West Coast Farmers

The West Coast Farm Plan Project is a farmer led and farmer focused initiative set up to facilitate the development of farm plans for all West Coast farmers.

This exciting initiative is where farmers will work collectively with industry to develop a Freshwater Farm Plan that is relevant and specific to them and their farm.

Key dates & numbers

Feb 2024

The rollout of Freshwater Farm Plans will begin on the West Coast from February 2024

20+ Hectares

All farms with 20 hectares or more in arable, pastoral or combined farming use, or properties with 5 hectares or more in horticultural use will require a freshwater farm plan.

18 months

You will have 18 months from the time farm plan regulations are activated for your area to develop and submit a plan for certification.

Working together

Through three fortnightly workshops and one farm visit we will guide you through creating your own Freshwater Farm Plan alongside other farmers. This is a prime opportunity to discuss common issues and develop new solutions as part of a team. The workshops are supported by West Coast Regional Council, Westland Milk Products, Beef and Lamb, DairyNZ, DeerNZ, Ravensdown, Ballance and Ministry for Primary Industries to ensure the plan you create is of a high standard and able to meet certification requirements.

Fully funded

This fully funded programme is the first of its kind on the West Coast and will set the benchmark going forward. The only cost to attend will be your time.

Full access

All learning materials will be available online for you to review in your own time between the sessions and share with your farm team.
